David Beckemeyer on Behind the Camera with AndyGames

I joined Behind the Camera with AndyGames for a conversation about political polarization, media literacy, and the forces that keep outrage dialed up in our public life.

As the host of the Outrage Overload Podcast, my work focuses on understanding how outrage media operates—psychologically, economically, and culturally—and why it so often pushes us toward contempt rather than curiosity. Drawing on research from social psychology and communication studies, I shared how moral outrage is triggered, amplified, and monetized, and why even well-intentioned people can get pulled into cycles of anger and tribalism.

In this episode, we explored practical ways to recognize outrage-driven messaging, slow our reactions, and engage more thoughtfully across political differences. We also discussed what it actually takes to promote civil discourse in a polarized environment—without pretending differences don’t matter or asking people to abandon their values.

This conversation is for anyone who feels overwhelmed by today’s media landscape, worried about the health of our democracy, or interested in learning how to stay informed without becoming consumed by anger. It reflects the core mission of Outrage Overload: lowering the temperature, strengthening civic understanding, and helping people stay engaged without burning out.

🎧 Recommended for listeners interested in media literacy, polarization, and building resilience in an age of constant outrage.
