David Beckemeyer on Lost in the Groove Podcast

I recently had the pleasure of joining Dave Lennon on his podcast Lost in the Groove for an open, unscripted conversation that ranged from the myth of red vs. blue America to my deep love of Porsche engineering. We covered a lot of ground, but at the heart of it, we were exploring how we make sense of a noisy, polarized world โ€” and where we can find some common ground.

In this episode, I shared some of the big ideas Iโ€™ve been exploring on Outrage Overload, including:

  • Why Most People Donโ€™t Fit into a Box
Weโ€™ve been sold this idea that weโ€™re either liberal or conservative and that the two canโ€™t coexist โ€” but thatโ€™s just not true. Most of us hold cross-cutting beliefs that donโ€™t always line up with partisan talking points, even if weโ€™re scared to admit it out loud.
  • How Media Incentives Fuel Outrage and Oversimplification
From existential fear-mongering in political campaigns to the clickbait news cycle, I talked about how algorithms and incentives push us toward emotional reactions โ€” and away from critical thinking.
  • Why Local Politics Might Matter More Than National Headlines
We touched on the sense of helplessness many of us feel when it comes to Washington. But I argue we might find more agency, and more sanity, by engaging with our local communities, where our actions can make a real difference.
  • The Intersection of Human Ingenuity and Technology
As someone with a foot in both the tech world and the world of public discourse, I also talked about why we need more humility when navigating complex systems โ€” whether weโ€™re talking about automotive electronics or social policy.

“These days, Iโ€™m a lot more selective about what I take a hard stance on โ€” not because Iโ€™ve stopped caring, but because Iโ€™ve realized just how much I donโ€™t know. And how much more there always is to learn.”

If youโ€™re a regular listener of Outrage Overload, youโ€™ll hear a lot of familiar themes here โ€” but in a looser, more conversational setting. Itโ€™s part car talk, part culture talk, part reflection on how we think, how we argue, and how we move forward.
