David Beckemeyer on The Flow with Bob Martin Podcast

Hey Outrage Overload community!

I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Bob Martin on his podcast, The Flow, for a wide-ranging conversation about how we got so overwhelmed by political hostility—and more importantly, how we can start reclaiming our collective sanity.

Bob’s show operates on a great premise: to go with the flow, you need to understand the flow. But as he rightly pointed out at the start of our chat, right now, our civic life doesn’t exactly feel like a lazy river—it feels a lot more like white-knuckle whitewater rafting.

If you are an Outrage Overload superfan, a regular reader of the Substack, or just someone looking for a “deep breath” of clarity in a noisy world, I think you’ll get a lot out of this episode.

Why I Stepped Into the Whitewater

Bob and I talked a bit about my background as a retired Silicon Valley tech executive. When I left that fast-paced world, I looked around at the broader cultural landscape and noticed a massive, unsettling shift. Between the polarization accelerated by the 2016 election cycle and the profound isolation and unrippling social tensions of the COVID-19 lockdowns, it felt like Americans never truly had a chance to pause, process, or heal.

Instead of just venting about it, my curiosity got the better of me. I wanted to know why this was happening and what the data actually says. That deep dive into the insights of social scientists, psychologists, and researchers is exactly what sparked the creation of Outrage Overload.

One of the Best Compliments I’ve Ever Received

Toward the end of the show, Bob completely caught me off guard with an incredibly generous bit of feedback. Drawing from Buddhism, he told me that he views the work we’re doing here as the path of a bodhisattva—someone who chooses to step right into the middle of the chaos specifically to help others navigate their way through it.

I don’t know if I’d go quite that far, but it serves as a powerful reminder of why we do this show: to clear out the noise, lower the collective blood pressure, and protect our communities from being manipulated by the outrage industry.

You can catch the full interview to hear the rest of our discussion, including Bob’s fascinating perspective as a lawyer on how the “adversarial courtroom model” has bled out into our personal relationships, and some great media literacy tools we both recommend.
