Outrage 86 – Why We Viscerally Resist Talking to the Other Side – Mónica Guzmán

Aired Apr 22, 2026

This episode explores why we’ve come to view curiosity as a threat and how our political labels have transformed from descriptions of our beliefs into shields that prevent us from seeing the humanity in our neighbors.

By examining the “archvillain” of fear, we uncover how our systems are currently rigged to reward anger and incentivize the creation of “devils” out of those we disagree with. Mónica Guzmán shares how her own thinking has evolved to focus on the essential link between trust and truth, suggesting that we cannot effectively circulate facts in a society where the social fabric has completely unraveled. We dive into the systemic incentives that drive our division and look toward the organizations and leaders who are successfully modeling a “braver” way to disagree without losing our grip on reality.

Ultimately, this conversation reframes bridge building not as a middle-of-the-road compromise, but as a high-stakes intellectual dare. It requires the courage to withstand intense disagreement while staying rooted in one’s convictions, and even the willingness to entertain beliefs we find false in order to discover a truth we might have missed. As the left-right paradigm continues to fail nearly half of the American population, we explore how to move past the shields of identity to reclaim a culture of curious, courageous citizenship.

Mónica Guzmán is a bridge-building journalist, author of I Never Thought of It That Way, and CEO of Reclaim Curiosity. Host of the “A Braver Way” podcast and a Braver Angels advisor, she champions fearlessly curious conversations to depolarize America.
