Outrage Bonus: Is the “Move to the Center” Framework an Outdated Political Myth? – Frank A. Spring

Aired Mar 11, 2026

In this episode of the Outrage Overload Podcast, we examine the post-election advice dominating Democratic politics. Following recent losses, a dominant argument is that Democrats must move to the center, tone down cultural messaging, and focus relentlessly on economic concerns to win back moderates. This is also in line with the thrust of the often-cited Deciding to Win report released in October 2025 by The Welcome PAC.

Conversely, a vocal wing of the party argues that “triangulation” is a relic of the past. They contend that the path to victory lies in leaning even harder into progressive idealsโ€”mobilizing the base through a bold, unapologetic Left-populist agenda that addresses systemic inequality head-on.

We challenge this entire “left-versus-center” framework with guest Frank A. Spring, the Chief of Research at Altum Insight and Managing Partner at Undaunted Ventures. Spring is a narrative consultant who conducts deep qualitative research with voters, focusing on sustained conversations about identity, values, and lived experience, rather than quick polling. His findings suggest that the problem isn’t where the party sits on an ideological line, but rather a fundamental “narrative confusion” that leaves voters unsure of what a Democratic vision for the future actually feels like.

Frank Spring argues that the traditional left-right ideological frame is “superannuated” (“obsolete”) and no longer works to describe how people make decisions. His research consistently shows that voters are “politically heterodox” and do not sort themselves neatly along left-right lines on social or economic issues.

If the “move to the center” framework is built on an outdated model of how voters actually think, and if the problem isn’t that Democrats are too progressive, but something else entirely, what is the correct diagnosis?
